As a 6th generation native of
Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana; Fin and Feather owner Kirk Prest is no stranger
to the waters. On the water at the young age of 3, growing up fishing, hunting,
shrimping, and oystering; has molded Kirk a very unique lifestyle, one that he
considers essential and invaluable for his business of entertaining folks in the
back waters of his home. Hard work, tough times, adaptation and yes, hurricanes,
are all part of his family history. “Spending weekends and summers at the
family’s camp on the waters of Empire, as well as countless fishing and hunting
adventures on the waters of Buras and Venice, truly has conditioned me for the
knowledge and experience I am using today in the business. Though we had some
tough times, the largest majority are experiences and adventures that I wouldn’t
trade for anything.”
Kirk’s deep roots in south Plaquemines Parish expand to
both sides of his family. His family tree is certainly a unique ancestry, in
that all 4 grandparents’ families originated in Plaquemines Parish.
His grandmother’s ancestors on his father’s side of the
family essentially settled the town of Empire in the 1830’s. These folks were
actually the largest citrus farmers in the state of Louisiana, during this era.
They were very successful fishermen as well. Kirk’s grandfather on his mother’s
side of the family was born in Ostrica (a small community on the east side of
the river across from Buras). These folks were fishermen, trappers, and cattle
farmers. Additionally, his other grandfather’s ancestors fought in the Battle of
New Orleans in 1812. This grandfather’s people were fishermen and machinists, by
trade.
The family’s tradition of fishing and hunting the waters of
Plaquemines Parish was always our way of living--for both employment as well as
pleasure, and has been for decades. Kirk’s love for the outdoors, along with his
other qualities such as his experience, hard work, business education, friendly
personality, and outstanding customer service are the secrets for Fin &
Feather’s success. Upon graduating from college with a Bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration, Kirk returned home to manage the family boat business.
A few years passed and Kirk decided to venture out on his own, building Fin &
Feather Boat Storage with his own hands. 2 years later he decided to build Fin &
Feather Cabins; creating lodging for folks while fishing with his team or with
their own rigs. As his business grew, so did his dream for entertaining folks,
both on the water and over delicious, freshly prepared seafood dishes. Today Fin
& Feather Cabins and Fin & Feather Adventures are well respected and successful
entertainment businesses creating memorable adventures for folks from
everywhere. After many decades of countless adventures and experiences, Kirk
acknowledges that to own and operate an establishment of this nature, one must
first pay his dues; which is the part that money can’t buy, you have to have
lived it and earned it.
“Just when I thought these fishing and hunting adventures
couldn’t get any better, I now have the enjoyment of sharing new adventures with
the family’s 7th generation, my son, Kirk Jr. Folks trust me, there are no such
words to describe the feeling and enjoyment in watching the excitement of your
son or daughter experience their first battle with a Louisiana Redfish, while at
the same time, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the great outdoors. Whether
you are fishing with family, friends, or clients, Fin and Feather has an
adventure awaiting you.
I welcome you to come and experience an adventure of a
lifetime with Fin & Feather Cabins and Fin & Feather Adventures…
